Signia Silk: Innovative ready-to-wear in-the-ear hearing aid expands market reach

 Silk

  • New mini hearing aid fits snugly inside most ears
  • Sits comfortably from the very first moment due to innovative silicon sleeves
  • Offers all of the advantages of the primax platform

Audiology technology leader Sivantos presents an entirely new product category at the 61st International Congress of Hearing Care Professionals EUHA in Hannover: Signia Silk – the smallest CIC (completely-in-canal) in-the-ear hearing aid that fits comfortably and straightaway in most ears. Two innovations make this possible: the hearing aid technology primax, which fits in the smallest in-the-ear devices despite its vast performance range, as well as the specially developed silicone Click Sleeves, which softly envelop the hearing aids and enable them to sit perfectly in most ear canals. Silk simultaneously combines several advantages that are highly important to first-time wearers. Not only are the tiny hearing aids extremely discreet, they are also immediately ready for wearers to test and take home.

With the new Signia Silk, Sivantos is targeting first-time users of hearing aids. They almost always want hearing aids that are as invisible as possible, which is why they tend to favor in-the-ear solutions. Many potential users have been deterred from acquiring a hearing aid by previously necessary waiting times for individually produced hearing aids as well as uncertainty about whether the devices will be appropriate for them.

Innovative Click Sleeve for high wearer comfort

Silk is so small that a Click Sleeve can be attached. This sleeve is made of soft silicone and was developed exclusively for Silk. It is available in six variants to ensure that Silk fits most ear canals and hearing loss types. It attaches with a single click, envelops the actual hearing aid to the greatest possible extent and can be supplied with or without small openings - for open or closed fitting. Thanks to the soft silicone sleeve, Silk hearing aids can be placed not only very deeply and therefore especially discreetly in the ear canal, they also sit safely and comfortably and are hardly noticeable to the wearer.

primax platform for top performance in a miniature casing

Silk is based on the primax platform introduced early this year and enables top performance despite the small size of the housing. Silk wearers benefit from excellent speech understanding and reduced listening effort, which has been proven clinically1,2. In addition, these small CIC hearing aids can be operated discreetly and remotely with a smartphone app and - using the easyTek accessory - can connect wirelessly with other electronic communication and entertainment devices.

Advantages for hearing care professionals and Silk wearers

Silk inaugurates a new product category. It provides advantages for the hearing care professional and for the wearer. With this innovative solution, the hearing care professional can fulfill the customer’s wish for unobtrusive hearing aids that do not have to be individually ordered for each customer. Customers can use Silk straightaway. From day one, they benefit from the advantages that Signia hearing aids with primax are renowned for.

Signia Silk is available in three performance classes – 3px, 5px and 7px – and is suitable for the alleviation of slight, moderate and severe hearing loss. More information is available at www.signia-pro.com/silk-primax

1 Two  clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments  (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Tresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.

2 Study conducted at the University of Northern Colorado, 2015, examined the effectiveness of the new features of primax by collecting and analyzing ongoing EEG data while subjects performed speech testing. For both primax features SpeechMaster and EchoShield, the objective brain behavior measures revealed a significant reduction in listening effort when the feature was activated.

If you live with someone who suffers from poor hearing, then you are suffering too.

Do you find yourself having to repeat a lot of things you say?

Is your TV turned up too loud?

Are you having to relay conversations in noisy situations, just to keep your partner in the conversation?

You are suffering from hearing loss, just not ‘your own’ hearing loss.

How many times have you suggested that your partner or loved one should go and have their hearing checked?

Is their answer that ‘they can hear fine’, if only people would speak properly.

In most cases hearing loss creeps up gradually over many years, the person might not be aware of it and start blaming everyone else for mumbling,  or notice that they have difficulties following conversations in a noisy environment. The hearing loss develops very slowly and over time the impaired hearing becomes ‘normal’. It usually takes several years before anybody goes to do anything about it, this can mean a lot of frustration to those surrounding them.

Instinctively we help them without even thinking about it. We repeat things they can’t hear, we point out things they miss and help them cover up the problem.

It is a very human thing to try help, but ask yourself, is it the right thing to do? Are you helping their denial of the problem when they really should be fully aware of it?  This is particularly important when one considers the health risks associated with untreated hearing loss,(see earlier news items)

It might be a god idea to let them know when you are helping, point out that ‘again’ you have had to repeat something,  raise their awareness of how often you have to help them or make notes of the times they have difficulty. Don’t get annoyed, it is perfectly reasonable to feel frustrated but remember, it is not their fault.

Hopefully they will see that they need to seek help. Contact your local independent Hearing Centre and book a hearing test. Be sure to accompany them, most reputable dispensers prefer to have a ‘familiar voice’ present during testing. In most centres your initial consultation is free and your hearing Professional will explain the hearing loss and why some things are heard while others are not. Then you can think about the results or suggested actions (such as Hearing aids).

In some cases, we will advise that hearing aids are not necessary yet.

You can contact your local independent hearing Professional, they will provide you with free advice on what to do.

With all of the developments in hearing technology, nobody should feel ‘left out’.

There is growing evidence of the links between age related hearing loss and dementia.
Of course, you might think, older people get hearing loss and older people get dimentia, whats the big news?

The evidence these days seems to point towards age related hearing loss as being a real contributor in the processes leading to dementia. In ways that do not seem obvious.

As I reported in an earlier news item,’‘Untreated hearing loss can affect cognitive brain function,  especially in older people and is associated with early onset of dementia.’‘

This has been reinforced by an article I read reporting a study by Anu Sharma, of the Department of Speech Language and Hearing Science at University of Colorado,  to determine the ways the brain adapts to hearing loss, as well as the consequences of those changes. She was presenting her findings during the 169th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), being held May 2015 in Pittsburgh. Sharma and other researchers have recently discovered that other areas of the brain can recruit, or take over, areas in which hearing is normally processed, but which receive little or no stimulation in deafness. Her studies show that this not only happens in severe/profound hearing loss, but also happens with only a mild degree of age related hearing loss.

“The hearing areas of the brain shrink in age-related hearing loss, Centers of the brain that are typically used for higher-level decision-making are then activated in just hearing sounds.”

The group’s work suggests that the portion of the brain used for hearing can become reorganized, even in earliest stages of age-related hearing loss. And, “these compensatory changes increase the overall load on the brains of aging adults,” Sharma said. This finding has important clinical implications for developing early screening programs for hearing loss in adults.

“Compensatory brain reorganization secondary to hearing loss may also be a factor in explaining recent reports in the literature that show age-related hearing loss is significantly correlated with dementia,”  Sharma said.

Further, the results suggest that age-related hearing loss must be taken seriously, even in its earliest stages. “One in three adults over the age of 60 has age-related hearing loss,” Sharma noted. “Given that even small degrees of hearing loss can cause secondary changes in the brain, hearing screenings for adults and intervention in the form of hearing aids should be considered much earlier to protect against reorganization of the brain.”

Every Hearing Professional will offer simple hearing screening, most will carry out this screening free of charge. It is a simple process of playing soft sounds in your ear and seeing how low you can hear. you can contact any of the professionals on our ‘Hearing Centres’ Page.

Siemens Binax 5 Hearing Aid Technology

The Siemens binax 5 technology is now available in a full range of styles including Receiver In The Canal (RIC) hearing aids, traditional Behind The Ear (BTE) hearing aids and In The Ear (ITE) hearing aids. The Binax 5 is the mid range Binax technology, however, Siemens have retained many of the features of the high end device making this a very powerful choice.

We have been using the hearing aids for some time now and we have had outstanding results. We get really strong feedback from the customers who use the hearing devices and even experienced hearing aid users are impressed with the results.

Siemens Binax hearing aids

Main features

Binaxfocus

BinaxFocus automatically changes the focus of the directional microphones from wide to narrow, depending on your environment to give you better speech understanding. You can also control this feature manually to focus on a certain speaker or sound in your environment.

Binaxsound

BinaxSound gives you High Definition or “HD” Sound quality by sharing the sound between two the microphones on each of the hearing aids. This creates a eight microphone virtual network for capturing the sound around you.  If one hearing aid is getting a clearer speech signal, it can send this to both hearing aids at once.

Binaxguide

BinaxGuide changes the directionality characteristics of the microphones from focusing in front of you to behind you or to the side. This can also be changed manually and is perfect for car journeys when you cannot turn to face the speaker.

32 Channels

The Binax 5 contains 32 channels. This is far more than most other hearing aids and the jury is out at the moment on whether all those extra channels provide any additional benefit or not.

e2e Wireless

Binax’s e2e Wireless technology allows two hearing aids to collect sound from one side and send it to the other, giving a binaural listening effect. It also ensures that all settings are synchronised and the hearing aids are working together.

Other features

eWindscreen

This feature reduces the effect that wind noise has on sound quality when you are outside to help you hear those around you.

Sound Smoothing

This feature helps to lessen the impact of sudden loud sounds, which can be a problem for hearing aid wearers. This program reduces the volume and softens the effect for listening comfort.

Tinnitus Noiser

This program produces a range of sounds to distract the wearer from the symptoms of tinnitus.

Feedback Cancellation

This feature removes the whistling sound of feedback whenever something or someone gets too close to your hearing aid. The feature actually stops the feedback before it occurs.

SoundBrilliance

SoundBrilliance provides a high frequency boost making sounds crisp and clear.

Spatial Configurator

This feature gives the wearer total control over their listening in any situation. You can change the span of focus from wide to narrow so you can hear sounds from all around you or a small area in front of you. You can also change the direction of your hearing to the side or behind you. These hearing aids are controllable via the easyTek remote control and sound streamer or the easyTek app which is compatible with both iOS and Android Smartphones. The app allows you to adjust the volume, treble and bass as well as fine tune your program settings to each listening situation easily and discretely.

We have been using the new Binax 7 from Siemens for a while now and the results are excellent. Our customers have been raving about them. They especially love the benefits that they give them in noisier environments, even long term users are saying that they have never experienced hearing aids like this.

So now that the full range of Binax enabled technology is available, we thought we would give you a deeper run down of the hearing aids, what features are inside them and what they can do for you. First we will go over the features and then we will look at the different hearing aids available.

Siemens Binax 7

The Siemens Binax 7 is the highest level of technology in the Binax range. It contains 48 processing channels for improving sound quality and a huge number of features which enable it to be more refined and fine tuned for your needs. The full range of models are available in this technology from the smallest in the ear (ITE) through receiver in canal (RIC) to full size behind the ear (BTE) models and all are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.

Of the three RIC models available, the larger two, the Carat and the Pure have a rechargeable battery option and contain more features than the Ace, which is significantly smaller and more discrete. There are also a full range of custom models available

Main features

48 channels

The Binax 7 has 48 channels. This is a lot more than any other hearing aid in existence. Most top end aids have between 15 and 20 channels.

Binaxfocus including spatial speech focus

If you go into a noisy environment, the hearing aids will automatically track the levels of background noise and analyse where the speech sounds near to you are coming from. The hearing aids then work together by communicating wirelessly so that they can focus the hearing aids towards the speech sounds. This makes sure that you can hear the person you are talking to rather than the background noise around you.

This allows you the very best hearing experience in noisier environments. This after all is the place that most people have the problems.

If you want to focus on a specific speaker, you can manually focus your hearing in that direction using your remote control (for example, focus hearing to your right if you are sat driving your car and want to hear the person next to you whilst still facing forward)

Binaxsound

BinaxSound gives the hearing aids HD (High Definition) sound quality. Both hearing aids share the sound between the microphones which creates a virtual network of eight microphones to pick up the sounds around you.  An example of how this works is that if speech sounds coming in from your left are being picked up by your left aid more clearly, it will transfer the sound to both ears so that you can hear them in stereo rather than from just that one side.

This feature makes sure that you hear what you need to hear no matter what you are doing or who is speaking to you.

Binaxguide

BinaxGuide lets you manually change the direction of the microphones are focusing in to either front, back, left or right. This can be useful for car journeys if you need to face forwards but the passenger is to your side. To home in on their voice, you can use your remote control to tell the aids to listen in that direction.

e2e Wireless

Siemens e2e Wireless technology (e2e stands for ear to ear) allows your left and right aids to collect sound and send it to each other. This enables all of the above features to function.

Other features

eWindscreen binaural

This program cuts down the effect of wind noise on the hearing aids when you are outside. If you have two aids, they work together so that if the wind is affecting one side, the other side is made clearer to compensate.

Sound Smoothing

This feature handles sudden impact noises, it smooths them rather than eliminates them. The type of noise it handles is cutlery rattling or a door slamming. The hearing aid reacts immediately to loud and unexpected sounds and softens them.

Tinnitus masking program

We can set up a personalised program of sounds to help to lessen the effects of your tinnitus with this feature.

Feedback Cancellation

The screeching sound that you get from your hearing aid when your ear gets too near to the side of your chair or you hug someone? This feature gets rid of that before it happens.

Spatial Configurator

Using the app you can download on your Android or Apple smartphone you can have full control over your hearing aid. You can control the volume as well as individually altering bass and treble. The program can be changed, your hearing can be focused in a particular direction and you can fine tune each program’s settings easily and discretely.

It Seems Everything is Smart These Days

Smart hearing aids IrelandIt seems that every device is smart nowadays, everyday, ordinary devices have become “smart”,  phones, TVs, fridges even your toothbrush. To be Smart devices they must be easy to use, intuitive, they should anticipate your needs, interact with you on a daily basis, and connect and work with many other consumer electronics. Modern hearing aids are no different, you may have heard of smart hearing aids, it is a term that is used more and more to describe the latest hearing devices available. As something you use all day long, it makes sense that hearing aids should be smart, too. But what exactly can you expect from a smart hearing aid?

Smart Hearing Aids Make Life Easier

Intelligent hearing aids have been around for many years, in essence every hearing aid is an intelligent devices. The current Siemens models, however, go one step further because they are smart. They adapt automatically to each listening situation and their wearers’ listening preferences. They communicate with each other as a pair and also with other modern communication and consumer electronics. Further they mimic natural hearing processes so that they can deliver a natural sound quality. As a result they have a particularly pleasing sound, are extremely flexible and very easy to operate – simply smart. The Siemens brand calls this smartHearing

Smart Hearing Aid Features, What Can You Expect?

Working together as a pair

Hearing happens in your ears, understanding actually happens in your brain. When we hear, our brain takes the natural sound supplied by both ears to make sense of what our ears are hearing. Traditional hearing aids, even when fitted to both ears interfered with this natural hearing process because they failed to retain the natural cues. However, smart hearing aids are able to exchange information between them allowing them to work as a pair making processing decisions together which allows them to mimic natural hearing. This feature goes by many names such as binaural processing or binaural hearing etc.

Automatically optimising for the sound environment

Smart hearing aid technology analyses the surrounding sound environment constantly, but it goes one step further by then optimising the performance of the hearing aids accordingly. It simply means the hearing devices know what kind of sound situation you’re in constantly. Your listening needs and how they should work will be different depending on your sound environment. Smart hearing aids from Siemens accurately and instantly differentiate the sound environments and then deliver the performance that’s needed.

Automatically adapting to your needs

Having analysed the sound environment together, smart hearing aids use their ability to talk to each other to make processing decisions together. This ability to make decisions as a pair really gives real power and performance. They then automatically adapt their performance as a unit to provide the best listening experience in that situation. For example, at a noisy gathering, they would automatically focus on the person talking in front of you while reducing speech and noise coming from other directions. However, in a quiet place the hearing aids would allow you to hear sounds from all around you.

Connecting wirelessly

Hearing Aid appsLearning how you like to hear

The latest smart hearing aids from Siemens will also learn your specific listening preferences. As you use them, they learn how you like them set in different situations. No hearing aid, no matter how smart, can fully anticipate your preferences from day one. What they will do is learn your preferences over time.

Interactive devices

The latest Siemens smart hearing aids interact with all sorts of other electronics, this connection allows you unprecedented freedom. You can stream a phone call without touching your phone, listen to the music on your phone, or use apps like Pandora® or Spotify®, or watch a movie from your TV or tablet. Siemens smart hearing aids can also be controlled easily and discreetly via free apps on your  smartphone.

The latest Siemens Hearing aids can do this and much more, if you have any questions or you would like to trial this fantastic technology, why don’t you give us a call on 1800 301 335 or book your appointment online.

New Smaller Custom Hearing Aids with Innovative Wireless Technology

When it comes to hearing aids, many people think that the smaller, the better. In our last article we talked about the new Siemens Insio™ hearing aids. If you like smaller, than they might be the perfect solution for you. What is really fantastic is that even the tiniest models of our top in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids are now equipped with the latest wireless technology and directional microphone systems. This is another worldwide first from Siemens.

More performance, yet even smaller

As we said, the new Insio are smaller than their predecessors and Siemens have packed features that offer far broader performance in an even smaller package. They have also done some nifty tricks when it comes to power consumption and management, it means they can continue to run on the smallest of batteries, since they still need very little power.

Natural hearing

The technology within the new Insio hearing aids is inspired by natural hearing processes. They capture their sound environment much more accurately than their older devices. Thanks to High Definition Sound Resolution (HDSR), they reproduce sound for you in even finer detail. Siemens says that this is how Insio offers users a three-dimensional, natural sound experience and precise hearing. They also deliver all of that even in difficult listening situations like crowded restaurants. Even with the typical background noise like dishes clattering, music playing and other diners engaged in lively conversation all around, you can more easily focus on the speech you want to hear.

Better exchange of information

Siemens have also made sure that the new Insio hearing aids can do even more than exchange information about volume levels, sounds, program settings, and internal computations. When fit as a pair the Insio devices on your left and right ears also exchange and combine audio data of the surrounding sound environment. Instantaneously, they recognize and analyze the sound environment, identify the directions from which sound is coming, and exchange relevant information with one another. Through some really clever technology, models with one microphone per device form a virtual four-microphone network, while others with two microphones apiece create a virtual eight-microphone network. This allows much better focus on the speech you want to hear and delivers unprecedented clarity.

Custom Hearing Aids For Even The Most Severe Hearing Loss

Powerful but discreet in the ear hearing aids

Siemens Insio hearing aidsPeople with severe hearing loss need powerful hearing aids, that usually means that they can only use behind the ear hearing devices. Now for the first time, with the newest models of the Siemens Insio family, they can also choose the smallest in-the-ear devices. Not just a new discrete option for severe hearing loss, but also the very latest wireless technology. When worn as a pair, they connect wirelessly to each other, coordinate settings and even exchange audio signals among themselves.

The new Insio hearing aids use innovative technology to mimic natural hearing processes. For you, it simply means you can hear more clearly and understand more easily, even with the particularly small Insio hearing aids being scarcely visible.

If You have severe hearing loss and you would like a more discreet option, why not call us on 1800 301 335 to book your appointment or book online now

A discreet option

Having come onto the market only recently, the Siemens Insio family of in-the-ear hearing aids offers high-technology in the smallest of spaces. Suitable for virtually any ear canal type and even sitting completely in the ear canal, they are practically invisible from the outside and therefore particularly discreet.

Wireless Hearing Aids

Insio CICAlthough small, the Insio hearing aids use the innovative Siemens technology of the mainly larger, high-end behind-the-ear models. In this case, the hearing aids in the left and right ear connect wirelessly to each other and even exchange the audio signals of the microphones among themselves. It may sound complicated but it isn’t for hearing aid wearers as these processes take place completely automatically in the background.

People with impaired hearing benefit from the result: a full and pleasant sound and clear speech comprehension. Their technological edge comes into its own particularly when the surroundings are noisy or the wind is blowing.

Even for severe hearing loss

Now, with the new, especially powerful Insio models, people with severe hearing impairment can use this technology in discreet in-the-ear hearing aids for the first time. The innovations of the shell, which is custom made for each ear, also provide the amplification necessary for severe hearing loss. They have been matched to the specific hearing requirements of the severely hearing impaired – particularly for directional hearing and speech comprehension.

Smart hearing aids, smart apps

There are free apps for Apple and Android smartphones which can be used to remotely control the hearing aids. This works even more conveniently with the easyTek accessory which is worn around the neck. The hearing aids connect to sophisticated communication and consumer electronics via easyTek. easyTek can work both as a hands-free facility for smartphones and, when connected via a wireless adaptor for example, can also transmit the sound from the television straight to the hearing aids.

The Binax 7 Range in Dublin & Across Ireland

Siemens Binax Hearing Aids

Better Than Normal Hearing

Siemens has made the claim that the Binax can deliver better than normal hearing in noisy situations and all of the studies confirm it.

The Siemens Binax 7 is the highest level of technology avaialble from Siemens in the Binax range. It contains 48 processing channels for improving sound quality and a greater number of features which enable it to be more refined and fine tuned for your needs. The full range of models are available from the smallest “in the ear” to full size “behind the ear” models and all are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.

Of the three RIC (Receiver in canal) models available, the larger two, the Carat and the Pure have a rechargeable battery option and contain more features than the Ace, which is significantly smaller and a more discrete option.

If You would like to try out this extraordinary technology. Why not call us on 1800 301 335 to book your appointment or book online now

Main features

The Most channels

The Binax 7 is 48 channel hearing aid. This is a lot more than any other hearing aids in existence from any of the manufacturers. Most top end aids have between 15 and 20 channels. Professionals are undecided whether these extra channels provide additional benefit or not. The cochlea (inner ear) only contains 20 natural channels, with around 17 or 18 of which we think are used.

Binaxfocus including spatial speech focus

This feature helps you to hear conversation better in noisy environments, if you go into a noisy place, the feature will automatically track the levels of background noise and work out where the speech sounds near to you are coming from. The hearing aids will then then work together by communicating wirelessly so that they focus the hearing aids towards the speech sounds. This allows you to hear the person you are talking to rather than the background noise around you. The feature is automatic, but it also has a manual option if you want to focus on a specific speaker, you can manually focus your hearing in that direction using your remote control.

Binaxguide

BinaxGuide lets you manually change the direction of the microphones are focusing in to either front, back, left or right. This can be useful for car journeys if you need to face forwards but the passenger is to your side. You simply use your remote control to tell the aids to listen in that direction.

e2e Wireless

Siemens e2e Wireless technology (e2e stands for ear to ear) allows your left and right aids to collect sound and send it to each other. This enables all of the above features to function.

Other features

eWindscreen binaural

This program cuts down the effect of wind noise on the hearing aids when you are outside. If you have two aids, they work together so that if the wind is affecting one side, the other side is made clearer to compensate.

Sound Smoothing

This feature is a noise reduction feature that manages impact or sudden noises, for instance if a door is slammed or a plate is dropped on the floor the hearing aid reacts immediately to soften those loud and unexpected sounds.

Tinnitus masking program

This feature allows your Irish Hearing Aids professional to run some tests to find the frequency of your tinnitus and add a personalised program of sounds to help to lessen the effects of your tinnitus.

Feedback Cancellation

The whistling or screeching that you get from your hearing aid when your ear gets too near to the side of your chair or you hug someone is called feedback. This feature is ultra fast and gets rid of the problem before it happens.

Bluetooth Connection

This enables Bluetooth streaming using the easyTek sound streamer and your remote control. Stream sounds directly from your phone or TV.

Siemens hearing aids have dramatically improved over the last year or two and the Binax 7 has been exceptionally well received by professionals and customers alike. If you are interested in this technology but your budget won’t stretch to this model then you might also want to consider the Binax 5 or Binax 3.

What You Can Expect From the Hearing Test in Dublin and Across Ireland

There are many steps that are part of a hearing test that is undertaken by Irish Hearing Aid Partners. If you think that you may have a hearing loss or might need a hearing aid, you will first need to have a hearing test. The hearing test is non intrusive and usually takes less than an hour to complete. At the time of the hearing test we will take a case history, this allows us to determine how much your hearing problem impacts your day-to-day life as well as the lives of your family. We will ask questions about when and how your sense of a hearing loss started, what are the problem areas you are experiencing, if there is ringing in your ears (tinnitus) and if you experience dizziness. We will also ask some basic questions about your general health history.

The Hearing Test

The hearing test itself involves the following set of tests of your hearing;

Pure tone testing (Audiometry)
Speech testing (Audiometry)
Tympanometry (If Needed)

The results from your hearing tests allow us to understand what sounds you can hear and more importanly what sounds you are missing. The answers you give us about your life style and what impact your hearing loss is having, allows us to understand what type, and technology of hearing aid might be for you. Sometimes the results of your hearing tests mean that we have to refer you to an ENT Consultant. However, this is a rare occurrence.

What Happens Next?

We will explain clearly the results of our tests, giving you an understanding of what you can hear and what you can’t hear so you can understand why that is having the impact on your life. If your hearing test reveals a permanent treatable hearing loss, we will:

  • Recommend hearing aids for one or both ears
  • We will clearly explain what we expect hearing aids to do for you on a daily basis
  • We will recommend a level of hearing aid technology that is suitable for your needs
  • We will also speak to you about ongoing care and support so that you can continue to enjoy the benefits of better hearing.

We want to be very clear on what we propose, how we propose to deliver it and how you can be expected to benefit from it. So we will give you all of the information needed.

What You Can Expect From Us

We want to deliver the very best hearing solution for you, in fact we guarantee it so you can expect us to do:

  • We will help you choose the best hearing aid style, features and level of sophistication based on your degree of hearing loss, lifestyle, and financial circumstances.
  • We will never pressure you and the final decision on which hearing aid is purchased is always your decision.
  • We will continuously support you in order that you enjoy the full benefits of better hearing for the lifetime of your hearing aids.

Social Welfare Grants For Hearing Aids

hearing aids DublinGrants to help against the cost of buying hearing aids are available from the Department of Social and Family Affairs in Ireland. The department operates the Treatment Benefit Scheme, under which the financial assistance for hearing aids is obtainable. Qualifying patients and their dependant spouses who have full PRSI cover can obtain a substantial grant towards the cost of a hearing aid. This includes full contributory pensioners, invalidity pensioners, those on disability benefit and their dependant spouses. PRSI contribution conditions apply to the eligibility.

€1,000 Towards Hearing Aids

In the case of one hearing aid, the grant is 50% of the purchase price of a hearing aid up to a maximum of €500, or 50% of the repair cost of a hearing aid. In the case of two hearing aids, the maximum grant is 50% of the cost up to a maximum of €1000. The grant for the purchase of hearing aids becomes available to qualified people once every 4 years which means you can upgrade your hearing aids every four years.

Registered Hearing Aid Specialists

As registered panel members of the Department’s Treatment Benefit Scheme, all of our Independent hearing aid audiologists in Dublin and across Ireland can complete all the necessary application forms and process this grant on your behalf. The process normally takes around 2 weeks from application to notification of result.

Medical Card Holders can also benefit from high quality hearing aids by dealing with a private hearing aid dispenser, as long as they are eligible for the PRSI scheme. The Social Welfare hearing aid grant is available to both qualifying non-medical card and medical card holders when obtaining a hearing aid privately. Please contact us if you want further details.

binax BestSound Technology from Siemens

Introducing binax. A world first in hearing aid technology.

Binax Hearing Aids

Binax is a new hearing technology that is clinically proven to outperform normal hearing in demanding listening environments*. binax is the next generation of Siemen’s famous BestSound Technology that enables wearers to achieve up to 25% better speech recognition than individuals with normal hearing in challenging listening environments like restaurants and cocktail parties*. **Studies conducted at University of Northern Colorado (2014) and Oldenburg Horzentrum (2013) showed that Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using binax with Narrow Directionality, compared to people with normal hearing. This corresponds to over 25% improvement in speech understanding.

For the first time ever, experience hearing aids that solve the two most common hearing aid complaints.

*Hearing in demanding environments like restaurants, cocktail parties, or the car.
*Hearing in windy environments like the golf course or on a boat.
**Hearing aid owners are more likely to have more difficulty hearing in noise (66% “quite difficult” to “extremely difficult”, versus 34%, “somewhat difficult” to “slightly difficult”) – MarkeTrak VIII: 25-Year Trends in the Hearing Health Market, October 2009.

Difficulty Hearing?

Hearing loss is typically not a phenomenon that occurs overnight;  instead it is a very gradual process that occurs over a long span of time. Because it is gradual, the effects of hearing loss may be difficult to recognize. Read more about why we don’t hear

We forget what things sound like to normal hearing individuals and we may begin to find ourselves routinely asking people to repeat themselves during conversations, straining to hear a speaker at a public meeting or a religious service, or having difficulty talking while on the telephone.

A hearing loss is seldom something that you get suddenly, it creeps up on you very slowly over many years. Most people only realise this after several years of unnecessary suffering, and annoying family and friends. Try our easy online hearing test

Studies have shown that people wait, on average, 7 years from the time they begin to realise they have hearing difficulties, to the time they actually do anything about it.

15% of the entire population have a hearing loss that is significant enough to require assistance. This figure rises to 40% for people over 50yrs, and 70% for people over 70yrs. You do not have to suffer on in silence, find out how to hear better

Hearing Damage

Hearing loss is caused by a variety of factors. the most worrying of these is the levels of noise we are exposed to today. Read more about Hearing Damage

Your Next Steps

By coming to our website, you have taken a big step forward. The first step towards better hearing, is the acceptance that you have a hearing loss. Take the next steps with us.

The new Siemens Insio hearing aid range offers what is currently the world’s smallest in-the-ear hearing instrument with state-of-the-art wireless technology. The hearing aids in the left and right ears not only synchronize the important settings constantly, but also exchange audio signals between themselves. That is a world’s first!  The hearing instruments can also be conveniently controlled using a smartphone app. In addition, the optional accessory easyTek can be used to route the sound from phones and TV directly into the hearing aids. Turning your hearing aids into ‘Wireless’ headphones for your media devices.

Insio CIC

Wearers who choose ‘in-the-ear’ hearing instruments usually value discretion highly, but the small size used to mean that it was not possible to integrate all the technologies available today in the particularly small models, up until now. Thanks to the completely revised design of the new Insio range from Siemens, it is now possible to equip even the smallest devices with the latest wireless technology. In addition to synchronising volume, tone and program settings, this new system allows them to exchange the audio signals from their microphones for the very first time. As such, a virtual four-microphone system is formed from the one microphone in the left and right hearing aid respectively.

As the technology also replicates the processes of natural hearing,  the Insio hearing aids offer their wearers a spatial, comfortably natural sound experience and allow relaxed hearing – even in difficult noise environments. Even the disruptive effects of wind noises, which push conventional microphone systems to their limits, can now be effectively suppressed.

At the same time, the programs, volume, and sound adjust automatically to reflect the listening situation and preferences.  Nevertheless, if you wish to change settings manually, the hearing aids can be controlled conveniently and discreetly via remote control or the free TouchControl app for Apple and Android smartphones. The optional accessory easyTek offers additional advantages: It connects the hearing instruments to cellphones, telephones, computers, and music players via Bluetooth or via an adapter to televisions and home stereo systems. The sound is then transmitted directly into hearing instruments. There is also a free smartphone app available for easyTek, which makes it possible to select listening programs and audio sources directly, for example, or to display the battery status of the hearing instruments.

The new Siemens Insio hearing instruments are available in different sizes and versions. For further information and to try out this latest technology, please Find you local hearing Professional here.

Hearing aid in sand

Hopefully, you’re in the midst of enjoying some beautiful summer weather. You should also be wearing your hearing aids, so you don’t miss out on the sounds of children laughing or birds singing. However, if you’re spending time in sunny, hot, and muggy conditions, you need to take a few precautions. Just like other sensitive high-tech devices,  hearing aids and their delicate components are vulnerable to extreme environmental conditions. Here are a few suggestions for keeping your hearing aids in top working condition all summer long:

  • Don’t leave your hearing aids lying out in direct sunlight. If your hearing aids aren’t waterproof, you might be tempted to remove them and leave them lying on a beach chair or table while you dip in the ocean or pool. Hearing aid casings are plastic, and as such likely to start melting if left in strong sunlight for too long. Make sure you tuck them into a case out of the direct sunlight and stored in a cool,  shady place, like a clubhouse locker.
  • Avoid excessive heat. Even out of direct sunlight,  leaving hearing aids in very hot conditions, such as the glove compartment of your car, can cause major damage to casings and batteries. Again, find a cool storage option, even if that means leaving them in your hotel room or inside your house for awhile.
  • Watch out for moisture. Whether the result of humidity, being splashed at the pool, or sudden downpour, moisture that gets inside hearing aids can cause irreparable damage. Protect your investment by wearing a hat when you go outside, avoiding splash zones,  and keeping your hearing aids stored in waterproof containers if you’re at the beach or poolside. If you’re going to be in high humidity, say while on vacation in Florida or the Caribbean, don’t forget to pop your hearing aids into a dryer box at the end of each day (note: if you have rechargeable hearing aids,  the charger likely comes with a drying function). Alternately, if you’re the outdoors type or live in a humid environment year-round, consider investing in a pair of water-resistant IP67-rated or waterproof hearing aids IP68-rated.
  • Avoid chemical damage. This can come in the form of spray-on sunscreen, hair spray, bug spray, or perfume, all of which could clog or otherwise ruin your hearing aids. Before you spray, make sure you take out your hearing aids and stow them somewhere safe. If you are concerned anything may have gotten on them despite your best efforts, use your cleaning kit to wipe them down and clear all the vents and other openings.

All it takes is a few precautions to make sure your hearing aids continue to function at peak performance throughout the summer, and for years to come.

This is a re-issue of an article I wrote in 2012, worth repeating.

Ever noticed that complaints are often shouted at you, but compliments are whispered?

What do you mean it’s broke!!! :-(

Oh, you fixed it? Well done. :-)

Imagine what it’s like for someone with a hearing impairment? They only catch the louder things said to them, it must seem to some that they are being given out to all the time.

And the sad fact is, they are not aware that they are missing out on the quieter speech sounds, they may just think that something has been mumbled.  (I will explain, in a later blog entry, why shouting at somebody with a hearing impairment seldom helps them understand better)

If you have normal hearing, stick your fingers in your ears, and if you manage to get a really good seal, you will experience around 30dB of attenuation, or to put it very crudely , a 30% hearing impairment. Most people, who gradually develop a 30% hearing loss, are convinced that their hearing is Ok, people just mumble more than they used to.  This is because the hearing loss has been a gradual process over a long time

Just try to imagine what they are missing out on? You with your fingers in your ears are probably hearing more than they are. But they (and their loved ones) are suffering unnecessarily. Do you ever find yourself shouting? Are the neighbours complaining that th e TV and Radio are too loud?

hearing aid finger sizeA  modern digital Hearing instrument, can be worn entirely within the Ear canal. These discreet Hearing instruments have the capability of recognising speech sounds from within the background noise. While we cannot guarantee that they will like everything that is said to them, we will guarantee to help them hear more of it.

We think that there are more than 500,000 people in Ireland who would benefit from hearing aids, but have not yet done anything about it. In most cases, a quick demonstration of the benefits of modern digital amplification can easily be arranged

If you know somebody who is missing out on some of the conversation, asks you to repeat a lot, or even just turns the TV up too loud, encourage them to have a hearing test.  You can contact us on 1800 301 335, email info@irishhearingaids.ie  or contact your local Dispenser, for some free advice on what to do.

It is estimated that as many as 20% of the population if Ireland suffer from some degree of hearing loss.

That means that most of the population are affected by hearing loss in one way or another, and while not fatal, hearing loss causes a lot of unnecessary distress.
It causes a loss of ‘quality of life, and can have adverse effects on your health. Yet, the media (TV,radio,  newspapers and on-line media) don’t seem to have any interest.
Hearing loss is not seen as a serious issue, it is not newsworthy. But those who suffer some sort of hearing loss, and their families, would beg to differ.

Usually at the start of the summer, there is blanket coverage of the ‘State exams’, Hearing loss affects 5 times as many people as these exams do.
No coverage.

If you combine Diabetes, Alzheimers, Osteoporosis and Autism, hearing loss affects more people than all of these combined.
No Coverage.

Personally,  I would like to see more coverage across the whole of Media that shows hearing loss for what it is, like needing glasses, a normal part of life for many people. The only time hearing loss seems to be mentioned is in a bad joke by lazy scriptwriters about the ‘guy’ who misunderstands things in hilarious ways.
We need a more positive light on this subject to take away the stigma and encourage people to accept that it is not something that is going away, they need to deal with it.

We need the Media to help us raise awareness that
* Hearing loss in a normal part of life.
* There are now proven links between untreated hearing loss and a number of other disorders, including Dementia.

* An untreated hearing loss is a lot more obvious than a hearing aid.

* Hearing professionals don’t bite (often)
* Solutions are available

How do we get the media to care more about hearing loss?  It would be great if there was an ‘Advocacy’ group for hearing loss awareness. There is a National hearing awareness month in the USA, and there are awareness campaigns from certain companies here, but no concerted efforts to drive home the message or raise awareness

There have been astonishing developments in hearing technology in recent years. If you think about the development of mobile phone technology over the past 10 years, there have been paralell developments in hearing aid technology.  Just last week I had a patient back for a follow up on a recent fitting,  she wore her new Siemens Binax hearing aids to the Irish Open (golf)  tournament having had them for two weeks and on a very windy Royal County down links course, she could hear the golfers talking on the green from the crowd, her friends with ‘normal’ hearing could not.

The old fashioned whistling banana hearing aids have been consigned to history along with the briefcase size moblie phones. The media will often use a hearing aid as a prop to show old age, but the reality is that those wearing hearing aids these days are the ones who are not old,  it is the people who do nothing about their hearing loss that get older faster.

Until now, wind has been the natural enemy of many hearing aid wearers.

Not only are the wind noises per se disturbing, the flow of air also creates annoying rustling in the microphones. The latest Siemens hearing instruments like the Pure, Motion, and even the particularly small Insio in-the-ear device are now equipped for the first time with a technology which tackles both of these problems at the same time.

As a result, hearing aid wearers are nowwind noise able to enjoy outdoor activities on windy days too. Even a light breeze can cause irritating noise for hearing aid wearers and disrupt their understanding of speech. Hearing aids need to identify wind noises as interference and soften them. More or less successful methods for this have already been around for some time, but a technology which reduces wind noises more reliably and efficiently than ever has now been developed for Siemens hearing instruments. It activates itself automatically without any need for action on the part of the user as soon as wind springs up.

In addition, the new technology offers help with another problem caused by wind. It’s an issue we are all familiar with from TV: When filming outdoors, reporters use a special attachment to protect their microphone from wind and reduce the whistling. As it is not possible simply to add a protective sleeve to the hearing instrument microphones, the developers of the Siemens hearing aids have come up with and implemented an electronic solution.

How does it work? First of all, the hearing instruments identify wind noises as interference and suppress them as much as necessary. In addition, they use the fact that the wind tends not to reach both ears with the same intensity to their advantage. As the hearing aids in the left and right ear continuously exchange information about the incoming audio signals, they now recognize which sections of the signals are affected on which side. And where possible, they can replace the damaged sections with their better counterparts from the other side.

For example: A hearing aid wearer is involved in a conversation when wind occurs. The hearing aids detect this and attenuate the wind noises on both sides. If the wind primarily hits the left ear, the rustle would be particularly evident on that side and, as a result, the hearing impression there worse. If the speaker can be heard more clearly on the right side, the hearing instruments then forward the clearer speech signals to the left ear, too. This allows the hard of hearing to follow a conversation considerably better, even in windy situations. If the direction and intensity of the wind change, the hearing instruments adapt to the new conditions immediately. All this happens completely automatically and without compromising battery life. As such, the latest Siemens hearing aids offer for the first time a noticeably more efficient solution to an issue which has been a major problem for hearing instrument wearers to date, especially in their outdoor leisure activities.

I just got back from a great conference in Athens. Hosted by Siemens, this was their 12th annual Academy meeting.
I try as much as possible not to miss this meeting as it is the one where we get to meet the people who design and make the finest hearing aids in the world today.

A very Special thanks to the local team for helping to organise this event, they could not have been more helpful, and as always a big thanks to the Siemens/Sivantos team. Once again they have scored a big hit.

Siemens have launched new  ‘Completely in Canal’ (CIC) discreet hearing aids in their already successful Binax Range.
These tiny instruments have more than 20 million transistors on the chip and can process 300 million instructions per second, these mind-boggling figures give us the capability to produce High Definition Sound resolution and audio transfer between devices in each ear, gives us a ‘virtual’ 4 microphone environment.
CIC

What does that mean to the consumer?

For individuals with a hearing loss, following conversation in a noisy environment can be quite challenging. These new instruments from Siemens offer narrow directionality.
By continuously scanning the environment for speech sounds then focusing on Speech even when it comes from beside or behind, these tiny instruments ensure the best listening experience available today.

Any hearing aid user will tell you that wind noise can be very irritating. the new Windscreen systems activate automatically and help deliver unmatched sound quality,  without compromising speech clues.

2 independent clinical studies have shown that an individual with a moderate hearing loss, using these products in a noisy environment, will hear better than someone with normal hearing. That’s worth repeating, better than normal hearing in a noisy environment.

They demonstrated the new tinnitus therapy system that is built in to these devices. Existing products have a variety of tinnitus noisers with lots of adjustments,  but these aids take it a step further. The new ‘waves on a beach’  therapy sounds can be adjusted or mixed with ambient sounds and you even get to select what type of beach sounds.

Whether listening in a variety of environments, adjusting the tinnitus therapy signal or selecting individual programme settings for your personal needs, All of the functionality of these instruments can be controlled via your smart phone.
Touch control

Bluetooth streaming via the little EasyTek device turns your tiny hearing aids into miniature Wireless headphones, you can stream phone conversations and music from a variety of sources. While you are listening, the automatic noise reduction and speech enhancement systems react immediately to changing environmental noises and ensure you continue to get the best listening experience available today.

This is truly a world first, hearing aid technology that out performs natural hearing.

Today, Sivantos Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of hearing instruments. With its 5,000 employees the Group recorded revenues of EUR 690 million and a reported EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of EUR 126 million in the 2014 business year. Sivantos’ international sales organization supplies products to hearing aid specialists and sales organizations in more than 120 countries. Particular emphasis is placed on product development. The declared goal is to make Sivantos with its brands Siemens, Audio Service, Rexton, A&M and HearUSA the market leader in the years to come. The owners of Sivantos are the anchor investors EQT together with the Strüngmann family and Siemens as co-investors. Further information can be found under www.sivantos.com.

Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing. The new wireless, two microphone Motion and Insio binax models have the same directional performance as the Pure and Carat binax.

What to do if your passenger has a hearing difficulty?

THis is a reprint of an article written for Taxi News, The official magazine of the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation

It is estimated that as many as 20% of the population might have a degree of hearing loss sufficient to require hearing aids, but only one in seven of this 20% actually do.

A lot of people rely on lip reading, but sometimes are not even aware that they are doing so.

If you have a passenger in the car and they have trouble hearing you, then make sure you understand their instructions and repeat back to them before you drive off.

While you are driving, you will be facing the road, if they are in the back, they will not be able to see your face. This is a simple thing to be aware of.

Some do’s and don’ts:

Do:

  • Be brief
  • Speak clearly
  • Turn off the radio
  • Speak one at a time
  • Keep eye contact
  • Ask if they understand?
  • Take your time
  • Write down if necessary
  • Persevere!

Don’ts:

  • Mutter
  • Talk too fast
  • Prattle on and on
  • Eat or chew while talking
  • Speak in a rush
  • Cover your mouth
  • Look down or look away
  • Change the subject without warning
  • Be embarrassed
  • and don’t give up!

A Taxi can be a noisy place, between road noise, wind etc. and while the person might understand you whilst the car is stopped, these noises while you are moving might just be enough to mask some of the sounds they are struggling to hear

If you are not understood, don’t just repeat the same words, try to say it a different way. For instance:   What time is it?.....What?....Do you know the time? Quite often there are some sounds that are not being caught, saying it differently gives the person a better chance of understanding.

There are many different types of hearing loss. Some people might have a mild ‘noise-induced’ high frequency loss, so they will be missing the ‘sss’,  ‘fff’ and ‘th’ sounds.  While this might not sound like much of a problem, there is a lot of speech intelligibility in those sounds, and it is very easy to lose the thread of a conversation if you miss them.

Hearing loss is a gradual process that occurs over a long span of time, and because it is gradual, people often don’t  notice that it is happening.  They might just wish that sometimes people would just talk a bit more clearly.

Others will have a more profound hearing loss, you might describe these people as Deaf. They might find it easier to communicate with you. They have probably had to deal with deafness all their lives, and have probably developed great communication skills.

If you or somebody you know has hearing problems, drop in to one of the professionals listed on our Hearing Centres page , where you will get friendly professional advice on the best options for your hearing.

Last week, I was fitting Hearing Aids to a lovely lady who is 95 years old. While explaining that her hearing loss is probably down to age, she told me a story.

An ‘old’ woman, went to her doctor with a pain in her right leg.

After running a number of tests, the doctor concludes that the pain in her leg is due to age.

But how could it be due to age? asked the old woman, I do not have a pain in my left leg and it is the same age!

I think it is very interesting that this lady can tell a story about an ‘old woman’ while she is 95.

Do we all think of old age from the viewpoint of where we are at the time?

Who wants to live to 100? ask the guy who is 99.

It is estimated that 3 in every 1000 newborn babies have some degree of hearing loss, this rises to 3 in every 10 people by the time we reach 60 years of age, these figures get worse as we get older, approx 50% of those 75 or older have a hearing loss sufficient to require Hearing Aids.

Many prevelent health conditions have a very strong link with hearing loss, For example:

Untreated hearing loss can affect cognitive brain function, especially in older people and is associated with early onset of dementia.

21% of diabetics have a hearing loss, compared to 9% of non diabetics

Low frequency hearing loss is associated with, and could be considered an early marker for a risk of cardiovascular and carabrovascular events

Hearing loss is tied to a 3-fold higher incidence of injury causing falls, and more frequent and longer hospitalisations

While many think of a hearing loss as an inevitable part of the ageing process, it should not be considered a benign condition that is passively dealt with, We know today that the consequences of untreated hearing loss can have a far reaching and devastating impact.

The vast majority of people with hearing loss can regain the quality of life, live better and longer with the help of hearing aids.

As I mentioned in a previous Blog item,Shouting never helps

The two most common types of Hearing impairment in Ireland are Presbycusis (age related hearing loss) and Noise induced hearing loss. Both of these types of hearing loss affect the higher frequencies worse than the low frequencies. The result is poor speech understanding because most of the intelligent parts of speech are in the higher frequencies.

The vowel sounds are in the lower frequencies, but these contain very little clues to speech understanding.

Try to read these two lines, I have used slash/ to separate words. You should try to vocalise them.

I _/I/wa_ /_ o /w_i _e /o__y /_owe__/, You/ wou__ /_o_ /u__e___a__.  But,

_f/ _ /w_s/t_/wr_t_/_nl_ /c_ns_n_nts/, y__/w__ld/ _nd_rst_nd/m_r_

(If I was to write only vowels, you would not understand. But If I was to write only consonants, you would understand more)

When you raise your voice, the volume level of the vowel sounds increases, but the consonants, sibilants and fricatives remain at the same level.

If somebody does not understand you, don’t just repeat the same thing, try to say it differently:

Have you got the time?  What?  Do you know what the time is?

If the person has not understood you, try to rephrase and speak clearly. Louder is usually no help.

If you are in regular contact with somebody who has a hearing impairment, don’t shout, don’t mumble, take the fag out of your mouth, face the person, speak clearly and not too fast, check that they are following you. People often give up too easily; pretend they understand then get left behind. Don’t let that happen, too many slip through the cracks.

But the biggest favour you can do for them is to help them get a hearing test, and try a discreet digital hearing aid. These are not your grandparent’s hearing aids; they only made everything louder and were often left in the drawer.

Among most of the people I know with Hearing Aids, (and that is quite a lot) the biggest regret is that they did not go for them years earlier.  Don’t put it on the long finger; contact your local professional, or Email info@irishhearingaids.ie or freephone 1800301335

High fidelity hearing protection and in-ear monitoring, hand-made and custom fitted.

Whether you are a performing musician, DJ, Sound engineer or simply somebody who loves their music, you’ll appreciate just how important your hearing is.

It is well documented that exposure to loud sounds can irreversibly damage your hearing, but by the time you’ve realised there is a problem you will be too late to do anything about it. Hearing damage cannot be treated, but it is very easy to prevent.

ER Hearing protectionProtecting your hearing doesn’t have to mean blocking out sound, our level attenuators reduce all sounds equally. They let you hear all the detail but at a safer level. Conventional hearing protectors attenuate more high frequencies than lows, that means that everything sounds muffled. This might be OK if you are working with a chain-saw but not if you are making or listening to music.

Our custom made ER and HF filters reduce all sounds equally, so it’s just like turning the volume down without sacrificing any of the detail of what you want to hear. Being ‘Custom Made’ they are extremely comfortable, and you can wear them for hours at a time.

I wear mine to any gig I attend; I can hear everything beautifully without the buzzing in my ears later.

Our custom made, soft silicone, In-Ear monitors deliver exactly what you want to hear from your music player or mixing desk, at safe levels, because background noises are attenuated. T series MonitorsOur ACS in-ear monitors are available in single, double, or triple speaker configurations. Whether you are on stage, in rehearsal, or on a plane, you won’t have to turn up the volume to hear every detail.

But don’t take our word for it, visit our website ww.acscustom.com/ie and read what some of the world’s most respected audio reviewers and engineers have to say about ACS monitors

Earlier use of Hearing Aids helps prevent auditory atrophy

There is a growing collection of detailed studies that demonstrate, clinically, that people with hearing loss have more success with hearing aids, when they act quickly. Why? Because when the hearing mechanism, and the complex neural pathways to the brain are deprived of sound, they weaken (or atrophy) making understanding more difficult when help is finally sought. This process is often referred to auditory deprivation

The way to beat auditory deprivation is early intervention. As soon as you suspect you have a hearing difficulty, you should seek the help of a professional. Adapting to Hearing aids gets more difficult, the longer you leave it.

Most hearing loss creeps up on you unnoticed, until you begin to miss certain things that are said to you, or you turn the TV up a notch. And the strange thing is, that although your hearing has deteriorated, your tolerance for loud sounds has reduced

There have, in the past, been well founded beliefs that Hearing Aids were no good for mild hearing loss or noise induced hearing loss, because they had to block the ear in order to prevent feedback (whistling). Not only were the old analogue amplifiers poor in terms of sound reproduction and just making everything louder than everything else, but the hearing aids contributed to hearing loss by closing the ear off to natural sound.

There are new families of Hearing Aids that have been developed over recent years, called Open fit instruments. These digital instruments use a thin tube to deliver the necessary amplification where it is needed, and at the precise levels needed, while leaving the ear canal completely open.

The ‘Life’ range from Siemens is probably the best of these instruments. Independent studies have shown that the Siemens Life instruments have the best Feedback cancellation system on the market today.

Take a look at the brochure on our Thin Tube products page.

Trying one of these instruments could not be easier, Freephone 1800 301335 to arrange an appointment at your local Siemens approved Hearing Centre

Three out of four people with hearing impairment have problems watching TV.

For a person with a hearing impairment, understanding speech while watching TV presents major problems, since the dialog is often mixed with music or drowned out by background noise. A recent German survey found that more than 75% of people with a hearing impairment, who responded, had experienced significant difficulties listening to TV. However, there is now an effective solution – and this also emerged from the survey – in the use of modern Hearing Aids such as the Siemens ‘Motion’ instruments. Wearers of these instruments receive the sound directly from the TV via a wireless connection to their Hearing Aids.

TEK Transmitter with Pure hearing instrumentThe results of a survey with about 2,000 Germans with a hearing impairment conducted by the Forsa Institute indicated that the TV especially is the source of major problems. 76% of them reported that they can hardly understand what is being said on TV. The study showed another important finding – what a great help modern hearing instruments can be toward solving this problem. In fact, after only a two-week wearing trial, about 75% of the respondents reported a significant improvement in how well they understood speech while watching TV.

Hearing instrument manufacturers are all too aware of the challenges for TV watchers. Therefore Siemens, the leading manufacturer in Germany, developed its “TEK” wireless enhancement system. It involves attaching a small transmitter directly to the TV set to transmit the sound to the TEK Connect remote control via Bluetooth and then directly from there to the hearing instrument. All this is accomplished wirelessly, in stereo, and with no time delay. It has the additional advantage that family members or other TV viewers without hearing aids can set the TV volume to their “normal” preferred level while the hearing instrument wearers simply adjust the volume arriving directly at their hearing instruments using their TEK Connect remote control.

TEK can be used with more than the TV – it can also be used together with the phone, computer, MP3 player, or any other audio device. When using the phone with TEK, the user with two hearing instruments would actually hear the phone conversation wirelessly in both ears, this is a big advantage. Siemens offers the TEK enhancement system in nearly all models of its current line of hearing instruments. This includes the ‘Motion’ range of instruments.

As we state on the home page, we are the only Irish manufacturer of Hearing Aids.

Why should this matter to you?

Unfortunately, most Hearing Aids fitted in Ireland today, are distributed by Multi-National companies, who seem to think that Ireland is just another region of the UK, and they only have service facilities in the UK. This means that Hearing Aids can take as much as a month to get repaired, or serviced.

Before I came into the business 25 years ago, the vast majority of Hearing Instruments took 4-6 weeks to get repaired, they usually had to be sent to a factory in the UK, and people were left without the very instruments they had become so dependent on.

Hearing Aids are very reliable in themselves, and with proper care and attention, they will give good service over their lifetime, but they are working in a very hostile environment, your Ear, and are prone to blockages with Earwax.

You should make sure that any Hearing Aid you buy can be serviced in Ireland, Better still; make sure it carries the Guaranteed Irish Symbol.

All of our production team realise, that giving that little extra effort in the production of a custom made hearing aid, can make an enormous difference to the hearing, and therefore the quality of life of somebody with a hearing impairment. Every one of our custom made hearing aids is made as if they were for a family member. We know that when you are happy, you will tell others who need our services.

Since our foundation in 1995, we have been making the best ‘In-The-Ear’ Hearing Aids in the Industry. But we already know that! We need to let everybody else know it too, hence the website.

We have built very successful relationships with Hearing Professionals nationwide, so we decided to include our colleagues on our site. Find your local dispenser here.

I hope you like this new website, and find it useful.

It is a first step for us, and will no doubt evolve as time passes. Check back with us for news articles and information on new product ranges, such as the new TEK connect system

Best regards,

Brian.
